Tomato Round-Up to serve up food, fun, music
Central Texas’ biggest little tomato fest slated for June 24

 
DRIPPING SPRINGS, Texas – Come whet your appetites as local tomato growers show off their prized produce, and local tomato aficionados get a chance to taste everything from Romas to Red Slicers during the sixth annual Dripping Springs Tomato Round-Up and Contest on Saturday, June 24.

 

The tomato-centric event will be held at Veterans Memorial Park/the Triangle), located at the corner of RR 12 and Highway 290 in downtown Dripping Springs. Parking is free. The Round-Up begins at 9 a.m. (8:00 a.m. for those submitting tomatoes for the contests) with prize winners announced at noon.
The tomato tastings and competitions will include garden fresh, vine-ripened tomatoes, from the smallest cherries to the largest, juiciest slicers to the tastiest heirlooms. First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded in five categories: cherry, yellow, heirloom, red slicers and romas.

 

Kid-friendly activities will add to the fun, while Round-Up attendees can learn from Hays County Master Gardeners about growing the perfect tomato; listen to Hill Country-inspired music; and bite into some new favorite tomato varieties to taste or grow. The Tomato Store will be selling mulitiple varieties by the pound and local vendors will be offering tomato-themed food and drink. 

 

Two separate competitions will take place during the Round-Up.  In one event, members of the public will have a chance to sample several tomato varieties and then vote for their favorites in the People’s Choice Awards. In the other contest, a panel of judges comprised of professional chefs, city officials and distinguished gardeners and tasters will render their verdict in the Judge’s Competition. Categories include prettiest, most unusual, biggest, tastiest and best heirloom.  The grower whose tomato garners the title of Best in Show will be honored with the Harley Clark Award in memory of Dripping Springs’ beloved organic farmer and tomato-growing wizard, who died in 2014.
 
The Tomato Round-Up is sponsored annually by the City of Dripping Springs and organized by its Farmers Market Committee.  Generous business and individual sponsorships, which are currently being sought, help make the event possible.
